Blepharoplasty: Upper & Lower Eyelid Surgery

Your eyes tell the world how you feel.  If you have drooping, heavy lids or chronic puffiness and bags under your eyes, others may perceive you as angry, sad or tired, even when you’re healthy and happy. Bright, open eyes appear alert and refreshed, allowing your natural warmth and beauty to shine through. If your eyes do not reflect the “real” you, we can help.

Located in Baltimore, Maryland we offer different types of eyelid surgery procedures, also known as a blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift. Our plastic surgeons have extensive experience with helping patients successfully achieve a more refreshed, youthful eyelid contour through an eyelid surgery personalized to your unique needs.

What results can  I expect from a Blepharoplasty (Eyelid lift)?

An eyelid lift can open the eyes to correct an angry or worried appearance. It can also help remove puffiness and dark circles for a rested appearance. Depending on what you’re looking to achieve with your eyelid lift procedure, there are a few different types of eyelid surgery options:

I want to open my eyes to correct an angry or worried appearance

A hooded eye surgery might be what you’re looking for if you have heavy “hooded” upper eyelids due to genetics or aging.

An upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty) can remove the excess skin, fat, and muscle to open up your eyes and give you a brighter, refreshed appearance. Through incisions hidden in the natural crease of your eyelids, our surgeons work with careful precision to achieve your desired improvement while maintaining your natural appearance.

I want to remove puffiness & dark circles for a rested appearance

Puffiness underneath your eyes can make you look constantly tired or years older than you actually are, which can occur in patients as young as their early 30’s. Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) can restore a more youthful appearance by removing or redistributing excess fat to smooth out the area underneath your eye.

I want to take years off my appearance

Many patients can benefit from a combination of upper and lower blepharoplasty. By addressing sagging, wrinkled skin on the upper eyelids, removing excess fat, and smoothing the skin underneath the eyes, this procedure can achieve dramatic improvements for a more beautiful eyelid contour.

Are You a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Patients considering any type of eyelid surgery should be in good general health and have a realistic understanding of what can be accomplished with a blepharoplasty procedure. Patients with active eye conditions or systemic diseases affecting the eyes may not be good candidates for eyelid surgery. During your initial consultation, your Belcara Health Plastic Surgeon will discuss your concerns, goals, medical history, and expected result with you and determine the best treatment plan to meet your needs.

What does an Eyelid Lift Procedure Involve?

Eyelid surgery is personalized to address your unique needs. The surgery will vary from patient to patient depending on the patient’s anatomy and specific concerns.

Upper Eyelid Lift Procedures

An upper blepharoplasty is performed using an incision that is strategically placed in a crease of the upper eyelid skin. Through this incision, excess skin, fat, and muscle may be removed to help rejuvenate the upper eyelid.

Lower Eyelid Lift Procedures

Lower blepharoplasty can be performed using an incision in the skin placed in a skin crease just under the eyelashes or an incision that is placed in the conjunctiva (inner lining) of the lower eyelid. The placement of the lower eyelid incision depends significantly on an individual patient’s anatomy.

Where Will My Blepharoplasty Procedure Take Place?

Most eyelid lift surgery patients elect to have their procedures performed on-site at our local Baltimore-based surgery center. Our 5-star facility, the Clarkview Surgical Center, was designed with the safety, comfort, privacy, and convenience of our patients in mind. It features state-of-the-art technology and meets the most rigorous safety standards.

We are proud to be one of the few outpatient surgical facilities to earn AAAHC accreditation, as well as certifications from Medicare and the state of Maryland. Because safety is our first concern, all blepharoplasty procedures are performed with board-certified anesthesiologists and registered nurses.

What Is the Typical Eyelid Surgery Recovery Time?

Every patient’s blepharoplasty recovery time is different and depends upon the extent of their personal treatment plan. Your surgeon will give you thorough instructions tailored to your individual case. In general, though, blepharoplasty patients can expect the following:

  • Rest in bed the day of surgery and limit activity for the next 3-5 days.
  • Avoid strenuous activities for about 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Typically, you can return to work within 7 to 10 days.
  • Wear sunglasses and protect your eyes from sun and wind.

Following your eyelid surgery, you will be able to rest in the comfort of your own home. If your procedure is done under anesthesia, you must have someone to drive you home after surgery. It may take several hours for the anesthesia medication to wear off, so expect  grogginess.

You may experience some bruising or swelling within the first few days of surgery; these typically resolve in 1-2 weeks. You may also find your eyes tire more easily for the first few weeks, so plan to take frequent breaks throughout the day.

Will My Insurance Cover an Eyelid Lift?

In cases where peripheral vision is restricted due to excess, drooping upper eyelid skin, a functional upper eyelid lift surgery can be performed to remove the excess skin and improve vision. Insurance may cover a portion of the cost of this type of blepharoplasty procedure. Our office will work with your insurance company to determine the scope of your benefits.

What Does a Typical Blepharoplasty Surgery Cost?

We understand that having a general range of procedure prices can be helpful, so we are happy to provide estimated price ranges for our eyelid lifts. However, it is important to note that these price ranges are general estimates only.

The Typical Price Range for an Eyelid Lift procedure costs: $3,500 – $7,500

The best way to learn about blepharoplasty pricing is to consult directly with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.

During your consultation, your surgeon will listen carefully to your concerns and goals and assess your medical history, lifestyle, and anatomy. Together, you and your surgeon will review all your treatment options and develop a personalized plan that meets all your needs. Only then are we able to provide an accurate price quote for your type of eyelid surgery, which will include:

  • All visits before and after the procedure
  • Operating Room time and supplies
  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Anesthesia fees
  • All medical devices, implants, and support materials

“As a young professional in my early 40’s I always felt like my eyes “showed my age”. I appeared tired, even when I wasn’t. Everyone at Belcara Health was kind and compassionate. My surgeon took the time to explain everything prior to the surgery and even sat down and addressed all my concerns after the surgery. MY EYES LOOK AMAZING!!!! I never realized how green they were.  I would highly recommend Belcara Health to anyone considering surgery.”
