Bioidentical Hormone Therapy
If you have health concerns that are affecting your quality of life, such as low energy or sex drive, mild depression or irritability, weight gain (especially in your midsection), or trouble sleeping, an imbalance in your hormones may be the cause. At Belcara Health, we offer customized, natural hormone therapy to optimize your health and significantly improve your overall wellbeing.
Hormones play an important role in how our bodies function. Fluctuations in our hormones can have a significant negative effect on how we look, feel and perform. There are a variety of factors that can create hormone imbalance, including:
- Natural Aging – our bodies’ production of hormones declines as we age. This is most commonly seen for women in menopause and andropause for men.
- Adrenal dysfunction and thyroid disease
- Metabolic syndromes, such as diabetes
- Environmental toxins – parabens, the preservatives that are found in plastics and in our everyday items such as shampoo and make-up are hormone imitators that get transferred into our bodies through our skin
- Dietary toxins – Contamination of our food supply with pesticides and artificial hormones in beef, chickens, pork, etc.
The hormone system in our bodies is delicate and must remain in a state of balance for you to feel your best. If just one hormone is out of “whack,” there can be a downstream effect that causes your other hormones to become imbalanced as well. This can cause a variety of symptoms that can range from unpleasant to debilitating, including:
- Weight gain
- Low energy
- Hair loss
- Loss of drive
- Decreased sexual drive
- Depression and mood changes
- Poor concentration
- Memory changes
- Chronic fatigue
- Chronic pain
- Skin sagginess or dryness
Bioidentical hormones are created from natural plant sources, mostly yams, and soybeans, and are formulated to match the molecular structure of the hormones created by your body. They bind to your body’s hormone receptors in the exact same way as the hormones produced by your body.
In the past, certain synthetic hormones were used for this therapy. Unfortunately, the synthetic hormones had unintended side effects, including increased risk for heart disease, blood clots, strokes, and some cancers.
Today we use new bioidentical hormones that have identical properties to those naturally produced in our bodies. They create the same effects and body responses as the hormones that are naturally created in our bodies. Utilizing bioidentical hormone therapy can restore the balance your body needs, so you can look, feel and perform better.
Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation and analysis of your current hormone levels, your symptoms and your overall health condition. From this analysis, we will be able to determine the needed hormone types and dosage to be administered. Throughout your treatment, we will carefully monitor your progress and make adjustments to your therapy as needed.
At Belcara Health, we use a variety of methods to administer hormone therapy, including pellets, pills, topicals, and injections. Your delivery method will depend upon the type of therapy you need and your preference. Pellets, about the size of a grain of rice, are implanted under the skin in the fatty tissue, to release small doses of hormones, mimicking the body’s natural hormone production. Pellets can last between 3 to 6 months and are completely dissolved before the next pellet is inserted, and insertions are virtually painless.
Therapy for Men
Men have their peak testosterone levels in their late 20’s, and then it’s downhill from there. The result is andropause or male menopause. Low testosterone levels can result in depression, fatigue, irritability, frailty, sleep problems and decreased sexual drive. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy will balance your testosterone levels, significantly reduce these symptoms and greatly improve your quality of life. Common outcomes are:
- Mood stability, decreased irritability and depression
- Increased sexual drive
- More energy
- Greater concentration and ability to focus
- Better sleep
Therapy for Women
In women, hormone imbalances are common during monthly menstruation, peri-menopause (which can occur in the 30’s), menopause. In addition to reproductive-related changes, hormone imbalances can also be caused by thyroid disease, adrenal issues, stress, metabolic syndromes, environmental toxin, and smoking.
When estrogen, progesterone and testosterone production fluctuates, women may experience weight gain, mood changes, low energy, slower metabolism, hot flashes, insomnia and decreased sex drive. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can reverse these symptoms and greatly improve your quality of life in many ways, including:
- Improved weight management
- Better skin, hair and nails
- Less anxiety, depression, irritability and stress
- Improved sexual desire
This treatment can also decrease a woman’s risk for osteoporosis, dementia and heart disease. Estrogen contributes to maintaining bone mineral density. After menopause, women are at higher risk for bone density loss, partially because of the loss of estrogen levels.
