BOTOX® Cosmetic

Over time, repeated movement of the facial skin by the muscles beneath can form unwanted lines and wrinkles for women of all ages. These lines and wrinkles are “dynamic”—they happen because of the way a person’s face moves. Excessive sun exposure and a person’s genetics also play a role in the development of facial wrinkles. At Belcara Health in Baltimore, Maryland, BOTOX® helps men and women reduce the appearance of these lines and enjoy smoother skin.

BOTOX® for Reducing Lines & Wrinkles

BOTOX is a purified natural protein toxin. It has been used safely and successfully for many years.

When small doses are injected into carefully targeted muscles, the impulses from the nerves to the injected muscle are minimized, causing them to relax and block the formation of wrinkles. When the muscles relax, the skin stays smooth and lines which have developed over time are no longer apparent.

The most common areas of use of BOTOX® are the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet—other areas may be treated as well. This procedure is minimally invasive and provides a fast, simple way to reduce unwanted lines and wrinkles that make us look older than we feel.

Baby BOTOX®

“Baby BOTOX®,” or micro-doses of BOTOX®, is a treatment trend favored by many women, regardless of age, to provide subtle changes to the aging face. Though the name may be misleading, younger and older women are looking to “Baby Botox” as a way to address fine lines and wrinkles without losing muscle movement in the areas where Botox is applied.

Certain areas of the face are more conducive to Baby BOTOX®, including the glabella (area in between the eyebrows), above the eyebrows for a brow lift, crows feet, and above the lip for the ever-popular “lip-flip.”

Some women, especially women in their 20’s who are using BOTOX® as a means of slowing down the progression of lines, prefer smaller doses of BOTOX® in order to uphold a very natural, “line-lite” appearance.  While  these micro-injections typically require a higher frequency of maintenance appointments, they allow for more flexibility and less commitment.

In order to be considered a “Baby Botox” treatment, the service should be 10 units or less of BOTOX® per area.

What to Expect

Results of treatment begin to appear in about three to seven days. The effect can last for more than 4 months, after which the treated muscles will gradually regain their action. When the lines begin to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired results.

As with any injection, there can be temporary swelling, redness, bruising, headache or local discomfort. Rarely, clients have been reported to develop a slight lowering of the eyelid or slight lowering of the forehead. This is temporary and resolves in a few weeks. Some clients may have an uneven or incomplete response to the treatment. This treatment does not reduce the action of the muscles of facial expression distant from the site of treatment. Clients with neuromuscular disorders should inform their doctor before therapy. This treatment should not be administered to women who are pregnant.

BOTOX® can often be administered at the same time as dermal fillers for a more significant improvement.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the trade name of botulinum toxin type A, a purified natural protein toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and is the registered trademark of Allergan, Inc.
