Full Body Mole Mapping

Belcara Health Dermatology, led by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ciro Martins, is excited to offer mole mapping services. Patients of all ages can benefit from this service which offers a preventative approach to skin cancer. Body mapping is highly recommended for those who have a personal or family history of melanoma or have unusual-looking, atypical moles. Our goal is to provide complete photographs of your skin that can be used by you and your physician to effectively follow moles for signs of melanoma.

Mole Mapping, also called body mapping, is one of the best ways to document the appearance of the moles on your skin and is a critical tool for the prevention of skin cancers. Our advanced body mapping technology serves as the baseline photographic imagery for identifying changes in existing moles, detection of new moles and helps in screening for melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.
The high definition photos of your body map will be given to you in an album of prints as well as on a CD. This is a proactive, preventative service from which patients of all ages would benefit.

What Does Mole Mapping Mean?

Medical photographs are used by Dr. Martins to follow moles and lesions over time. He will have patient photos taken which can help detect new lesions or changes in their appearance. Mole mapping also includes close-up photography of atypical moles. Lesions are numbered on your body and a diagram, or “map”, is used so the photographed lesions can be compared on subsequent examinations. This allows your provider and you to follow individual lesions more closely to detect early changes.

Why are Unusual Lesions Photographed Instead of Removed?

Lesions photographed are not necessarily suspicious for melanoma – however, they have unusual features that may defy some of the criteria that are established for typical moles. Mole mapping photography helps to reduce the unnecessary removal of completely benign moles and preventing skin cancer by documenting change over time. If there is a lesion that is suspicious, we will notify you and arrange for its removal.

Will I Get to Keep the Photos?

We offer 2 options for receiving your mole mapping images:

  1. Express – which includes a CD with digital images
  2. Deluxe – which includes a digital copy AND a binder containing image prints

A set of images can be sent to your referring physician if requested.
