Patients considering a rhinoplasty to improve the appearance and/or function of their nose should be in good general health and have a realistic understanding of what can be accomplished with the procedure. What is involved in Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Typically, surgery takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis, usually with moderate sedation or general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty incisions vary depending on what needs to be done. Most commonly, a small incision is placed on the columella and just inside the nostril. These incisions provide access to the internal framework of the nose where cartilage is sculpted to achieve the desired size and shape. The septum may be trimmed to correct droopiness or realigned to correct breathing problems. Nasal bones may be realigned if they are too wide or crooked. A splint will be placed on the outside of the nose and possibly on the inside as well, to protect the temporarily delicate, nasal structures.
Where will your nose job procedure take place?
Most rhinoplasty patients elect to have their procedures performed in our on-site surgery center. Every patient heals at a slightly different rate and recovery is an individual process. Because you will have been under anesthesia, you must have someone to drive you home after surgery. It may take several hours for the anesthesia medication to wear off, so expect to be groggy for a while.
You will see a noticeable improvement in the shape and size of your nose after the initial swelling and bruising subsides, usually about 1-2 weeks after surgery. However, improvements to your new nose shape will continue for up to a year, until all of the swellings have resolved and the cartilage is fully healed.
While you should always follow your surgeon’s instructions, in general, you can expect the following activity limitations after rhinoplasty:
- Bed rest the day of surgery is recommended.
- Limit activity for the next 2-3 days following surgery.
- Avoid bending or lifting heavy objects for 1 week.
- Avoid strenuous activities for about 4 to 6 weeks.
- Return to work in about 7-10 days.
