Scars are formed by fibrous tissues that replace normal skin after an injury. Unfortunately, they are a natural part of the body’s healing process for almost every type of injury to the skin. The degree of scarring depends upon the degree of the wound: deeper wounds result in more significant scarring. Behavioral and environmental factors such as smoking, drinking and sun exposure can increase the severity of scarring. In addition, natural aging can contribute to scarring. As we age our skin loses the ability to repair damaged skin because it produces less collagen and elastin, resulting in greater scarring.
